El ex secretario general de Naciones Unidas ha fallecido en un hospital de Suiza a los 80 años de edad, tras una corta enfermedad. En 2001, fue galardonado con el Premio Nobel de la Paz. Annan fue la primera persona proveniente del África subsahariana al frente de la ONU.
“Creo que recordaremos a Kofi Annan por su dedicación a la paz y a los derechos humanos… Por su fe inquebrantable en que la diplomacia, el diálogo y las Naciones Unidas funcionan… en que podemos evitar conflictos y resolverlos, y en que nunca debemos rendirnos. Necesitamos seguir presionando. Tenemos que seguir defendiendo los derechos humanos, incluso frente a obstáculos aparentemente imposibles”, asegura Ravina Shamdasani, portavoz del ACNUDH, Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos.

El actual secretario general de la ONU, António Guterres, destacaba que Annan fue “una fuerza para el bien” y que “su legado permanecerá como una verdadera inspiración para todos”.
Para la primera ministra británica,Theresa May, fue “un gran líder y reformador de la ONU, que contribuyó a que el mundo que ha dejado sea un lugar mejor que en el que nació”.
El actor y activista estadounidense, George Takei, lamentaba la muerte del ghanés y aseguraba que el mundo necesita más que nunca visionarios de la paz, y le agredecía el servicio a la humanidad.
“Nos llenó de orgullo ver a un líder africano lidiando con problemas mundiales y encontrando soluciones para ellos, por lo que inclinamos nuestras cabezas en su memoria”, señalaba Cyril Ramaphosa, presidente de Sudáfrica.
Kofi Annan llegó a la secretaría general de la ONU en 1997 tras ir escalando posiciones en el organismo. Un cargo que abandonó en 2006, tras acometer una reforma de la institución e impulsar el apoyo de la comunidad internacional a África y a la lucha contra el sida.
